I've always been a private person. Plans and personal goals are things I'd rather keep to myself. I would share them once and if I've achieved them. Was this a manifestation of my fear of failure? More on this later.
The problem with telling your friends about your goals is that you will already get a sense of accomplishment. A dopamine spike thanks to your mates giving you a pat you on your back for your announcement instead of the deed. Ideally you would not be satisfied until you actually have done the work. You're tricking your mind that it is already done. Because you felt the satisfaction you're less motivated to do the actual work.
Don't worry, I'm not getting this information out of my ass 🍑 In my younger days I came across an inspiring TED-talk and I have been sticking to the teachings ever since. The talk is by Derek Silvers, titled "Keep your goals to yourself".
Fear of failure
Was this just a crutch, something to lean on to justify my fear of failure? If you don't tell anyone your goals then you can't fail them right?
I understand that keeping your goals to yourself can be very benficial for some. But I realise that it actually put me backward. I am someone whom grew up with fear of failure. The natural thing to do is to run from your fears.
Life is all about growth === getting out of your comfort zone. It's time to face this fear by doing the complete oposite. I've decided to blog about my personal life, goals and plans regarding my projects. You can call it exposure therapy.
